Austrian theologian to speak about ‘John Paul the Great’

An Austrian theologian and author of the new English translation of “The Theology of the Body” will speak on the legacy of John Paul II at an upcoming dinner at the Diocesan Pastoral Center Oct. 28.

Michael Waldstein’s talk will be addressed to “anyone who’s been touched by John Paul II,” said Katrina Zeno, director of the diocesan John Paul II Resource Center. She said he will speak on “John Paul the Great” in a way any adult will understand.

“We really want to honor the legacy of John Paul II. Particularly the way that’s being woven into our own diocese,” she said. “It’s an evening to be inspired by the life and the witness of John Paul II.”

Zeno explained that Waldstein has a unique window into the pope’s life through his work translating “The Theology of the Body,” a collection of 129 talks given by the late Holy Father about the relationship between man and woman.

Waldstein “has done some fundamental background research on the life and writings of Pope John Paul II that provide key insights into the late Holy Father’s teaching,” said Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted, who translated some of the pope’s teachings while serving in Rome.

“Dr. Waldstein’s scholarship is careful, professional and informed by faith,” he said.

Zeno said that while Waldstein is a scholar, he will speak on a popular level that is easy to understand.

John Paul II appointed Waldstein to the Pontifical Council on the Family. He is an expert on J.R.R. Tolkein and is known internationally for his work on the Gospel of John.

Tickets for dinner with Dr. Michael Waldstein at the Diocesan Pastoral Center at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 20 are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. For more information, call (602) 354-2356.
