‘Sun’ recognized as best in Christian press
Phoenix’s diocesan newspaper earns five press awards
The Catholic Sun Newspaper was recently recognized among the “Best of the Christian Press” at the annual Associated Church Press convention last month in Chicago.
During the April 25 awards ceremony, The Catholic Sun garnered an “Award of Excellence” in four categories: best regional newspaper, editorial or opinion piece, in-depth coverage, and newspaper design for a spread of story.
“The writing in The Catholic Sun earns a blue-ribbon: clear, economical, compelling. The headlines atop serve well, with inspired touches. The volume of original content throughout each issue is substantial,” wrote Duane S. Stoltzfus, chair of the Communication Department at Goshen College in Indiana and a former staff editor at The New York Times, who judged the category.
The diocesan newspaper received high marks for its coverage of the immigration crisis.
“These are very well-written articles that help the reader better understand and feel the human dilemmas associated with the immigration debate, and how Christian believers are extending compassion. The human stories add a strong emotional component to the writing,” wrote Ken Waters, a professor of journalism at Pepperdine University and a former magazine editor.
The Sun received an “Award of Excellence” for its November editorial, “Planned Parenthood slows down Komen’s race for cure” and for the May spread dedicated to exploring the novel-turned-film “The Da Vinci Code.”
The Dec. 21 issue, which garnered an “Award of Merit,” contained a “really effective design that leads the reader through the publication with ease. Thoughtful composition distinguishes editorial from ads with a contemporary flair and solid font selection."
