Students gear up for Good Shepherd Sunday

Students in religious education programs and Catholic schools are preparing special celebrations to honor and show their appreciation to pastors on Good Shepherd Sunday, taking place on April 13.
Students at San Francisco de Asís Parish and School in Flagstaff are making cards and writing notes and letters. They will fill gift baskets with their kind words and present them to Fr. Patrick Mowrer during Mass.
Sally Schauble, religious education director at San Francisco de Asís, said Fr. Mowrer’s greatest contribution to the children is his joyful presence and love of the Eucharist. He also encourages them to look beyond themselves in service to others, Schauble said.
“The opportunities that exist because they are willing to shepherd our Catholic schools are indescribable,” said MaryBeth Mueller, executive director of the Division of Education and Evangelization for the diocese.
The Diocesan School Board advises schools to get creative with their gifts, such as creating a special shirt or hat, or other arts and crafts pieces, for the parish priest. Students could decorate the school with posters and banners honoring their pastor or dedicate a song to him.
Administrators could also arrange a service project benefiting parish grounds, send the pastor a special treat or plan ahead and serve him a special lunch with one student from each grade.
“The pastors deserve some tender, loving care,” said Anne Wuycheck, a member of the Diocesan School Board.
Catherine E. Hanley in Flagstaff contributed to this story.
