pray for peace

Members of a Catholic peace group gathered in front of the Diocesan Pastoral Center March 10 for a prayer vigil to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Iraq War.
More than 30 Pax Christi members gathered for “A Lenten Call to Repentance.” They offered prayers for those involved in the turmoil of war throughout the world.
“I’ve been opposed to the war since the earliest times and I think we need to keep it in the public consciousness,” said Fred Karnas, a Baptist, regarding the war in Iraq. “As a Christian I feel like we need to come together like this on a regular basis to remind each other that there’s strength in all of us working on this together.”
A letter written by Jim Wallace, a prominent Christian author on the topic of peace, was read at the vigil.
“Repentance means more than just saying sorry. It is admitting that the course we have been on is wrong and committing to begin walking in a new direction,” Wallace’s letter read.
“Repentance has to do with transformation and that’s exactly what the U.S. Church needs to break out of its conformity to the U.S. government’s foreign policy of fear and war,” it read.
Julie Prevoznik, an Our Lady of the Valley parishioner, attended the vigil because she feels called to speak out against the Iraq war.
“Tonight has really increased my awareness of how the Church, and I as the Church, can and need to be empowered with other churches,” Prevoznik said.
“This movement, small as it may seem tonight, certainly inspired me to do more and speak to my family, my senator and my congressman,” she said.
