‘The Ash Girl’ takes stage at St. Mary’s High School

Budding actors at St. Mary’s High School are adding a contemporary twist to the classic “Cinderella” story when they present “The Ash Girl” April 16-18.

The story, by award-winning British playwright Timberlake Wertenbaker, is that of Ashgirl, a young woman who lives in a big old house, huddled deep in the protection of an ashy hearth. It’s not until she receives an invitation to the ball from the prince that Ashgirl, along with the help of her friends, finds the strength to go.

Upon her return, she realizes that she must fight the monsters who slithered their way into her heart and mind before she can regain the fleeting happiness she found with the prince. That means believing in herself.

The play begins at 6 p.m., April 16-18, in the Piper Hall Auditorium. Tickets are $5. For information, call (602) 251-2500.

Mexico City Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera, Msgr. Eduardo Chavez, who oversaw the cause for canonization of St. Juan Diego, and Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted will be among the festival’s speakers.
