Catholic radio comes to Phoenix airwaves
Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted will “flip the switch” for Immaculate Heart Radio, a 24-hour Catholic radio station that will begin broadcasting Dec. 17.
Valley residents will find the station, KIHP — for Immaculate Heart (Radio) of Phoenix — on 1310AM. The station is licensed to Mesa with the signal reaching the greater Phoenix area.
“We are very excited to serve the Church in this way by bringing the best Catholic programming from around the country and around the world to Arizona,” said Immaculate Heart Radio president Doug Sherman.
Programming includes devotional hours and evangelization and catechesis efforts for youth, young adults, families and couples.
Local programming will include “The Bishop’s Hour,” which will highlight the great work of the Church and laity in the diocese.
Immaculate Heart Radio was founded in 1997 and now has 23 broadcast facilities in the west.

St. Mary-Basha soars to new heights with ‘Eaglethon’
CHANDLER — Great things happen when people put their minds together.
Some 513 students at St. Mary-Basha School, wearing bright yellow T-shirts, were sponsored to read, run laps and do math problems during its inaugural fundraiser Nov. 20. Their brainpower added up to a stunning $113,000.
Organizers hoped for $50,000 to benefit the school’s technology department. Sr. Mary Norbert Long, SC, principal of the school for 26 years, said it was the most successful fundraiser the school has ever held.
The Eaglethon wasn’t all work and no play. A local ice company dumped man-made snow on the athletic field for recreation and students enjoyed bounce houses and sandwiches from Dilly’s Deli.

Xavier athletes take all five state titles in fall sports
Xavier College Preparatory athletes continue to make their mark in history. It became the first 5A Division I school in Arizona — boys or girls — to win all five fall state championships.
“This is our first year in the Fiesta region and we weren’t really sure what to expect, but as coaches we just motivated our girls to do their best, train hard and remain focused,” said Xavier athletic director and varsity golf coach Sr. Lynn Winsor, BVM.
The new competition was reportedly twice as tough, but that didn’t stop the badminton team from bringing home the school’s first state title in October.
The cross country team took home its third consecutive title last month. Xavier’s record-breaking time was better than every team in Arizona (all classes) at the 5A State Championships.
The swimming team captured its 11th straight title earning 546 points, the most ever scored in a swim and dive championship.
Xavier trailed Chandler’s Hamilton High School by one stroke going into the final state round in golf. Xavier ultimately prevailed and won by eight shots.
The school’s volleyball team took home the final state title beating Tempe’s Corona del Sol in three games.
