Bishop to celebrate Disabilities Mass
GLENDALE — Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted and the Knights of Malta are joining together for the annual Disabilities Mass Feb. 8. It is sponsored by the Office of Evangelization with Persons with Disabilities.
The liturgy, held in honor of the feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes, mother of the handicapped, will also include an anointing of the sick. The Mass follows a two-day retreat for the Catholic deaf Feb. 6-7 at St. Joseph Parish.

Catholic hospital receives $50,000 for healing garden
GILBERT — The Wal-Mart Foundation donated $50,000 to Mercy Gilbert Medical Center last month.
It will use the grant money to pay for “The Tree of Life,” a handcrafted steel tree sculpture created by an Arizona native that will become the centerpiece of the medical center’s first healing garden.
A member of Catholic Healthcare West, the hospital believes in surrounding patients, families and neighbors with an atmosphere of healing the mind, body and spirit. The garden will ultimately feature inspirational pathways, groves, art panels, a fountain and an amphitheater.
American liturgist returns to former parish for concert
Well-known American liturgist and former St. Jerome Parish liturgy director Rory Cooney will perform with the combined choirs of St. Jerome for a special concert Jan. 16.
In the vanguard of Church music composition in the United States, several Daughters of Charity taught Cooney Gregorian chant. He also sang with the David Windsor Boys’ choir where his love for Church music grew.
Dubbed “Things Remembered, Things to Come,” organizers promise an evening of “great memories” music.
The concert will be at 7 p.m. at St. Jerome, 10815 N. 35th Ave. A free-will offering will be collected.
Outreach Center invites seniors to embrace ‘Winter grace’
SUN CITY WEST — The Catholic Outreach Center invites seniors and their caregivers throughout the diocese to two special presentations Jan. 27.
Dr. Kathleen Fischer, author of “Winter Grace: Spirituality and Aging” and “Autumn Gospel,” will inspire seniors to find fullness, meaning and hope in every season of their life in her presentation, “Winter Grace: Rebirth of the Spirit.”
Dr. Fischer, who is also a counselor and spiritual director, will help professional and family caregivers find faith for their journey in a separate presentation, “A Spirituality for Caregivers.”
The day-long event begins with refreshments and an expo at 8:30 a.m. followed by the senior presentation at 9:30 a.m. and lunch at 11:30 a.m. The caregiver presentation is at 1 p.m.
The event, co-sponsored by Hospice of the Valley, also includes raffle prizes. The presentations will be held in the hall at Prince of Peace Parish, 14818 W. Deer Valley Drive. To register or for more information, call (602) 532-2981 or e-mail TCOC@fsl.org.
