Christ the King marks 50 years

MESA — In comparison to the Church’s historical timeline, 50 years is nothing more than the tiniest of hash marks.

But in a diocese that is only celebrating 40 years of existence, Christ the King Parish’s half-century of service to the community is something to celebrate, said Fr. Steve Kunkel, pastor.

“We decided it was a big enough celebration that we should do this for the whole month of November,” he said. “Every week, there’s something going on and something new to give away.”

The events included a kick-off Mass Nov. 1, where the parish gave away magnets celebrating the anniversary. They also had a night that brought together retired priests and youth ministers who served the parish.

“It was absolutely wonderful,” said Joe Noce, parish manager and 10-year parishioner. “It was wonderful going back over the past 50 years and seeing the history and meeting some of the couples who have been here since the parish started.”

Nov. 14 saw the blessing and dedication of the parish’s St. Peregrine Shrine, which will boast perpetual adoration and a place for cancer ministry. On Nov. 21, there will be a fiesta from noon-9 p.m. The following day is the Feast of Christ the King.

“Everyone’s invited to come and join us,” Noce said. “And even though we’re having so much fun, the building up of the spirituality in the community through this has been just tremendous.”

Fr. Kunkel said it was just a good time to celebrate the past, but also look to the future.

“It’s a major accomplishment,” he said. “But we’ve got a lot more to go still.”
