It’s been a pretty big week or so in sports from the Phoenix Open to the Super Bowl to high school and junior high school playoffs. Okay, so the latter two aren’t necessarily as big of a spectacle, but some of their games were equally as intense.

  • Basketball teams in the Catholic Youth Athletic Association finished their season Feb. 7 at St. Theresa Catholic School. In a very close game, St. Thomas the Apostle’s seventh grade team edged out Ss. Simon and Jude in the last 28 seconds of the game.

  • In another close CYAA game, St. Matthew’s seventh- and eighth-grade team defeated St. Agnes 43-41.

  • Two Catholic high schools came home with an extra cheer. Notre Dame Catholic Preparatory High School in Scottsdale took first in the Division III All-Girl Pom at state competition last weekend. See video. And Seton Catholic Preparatory High School in Chandler finished second. The cheer team took third place.
  • Brophy and Xavier‘s soccer team compete for the state title this weekend. Their games will be streamed live online. Click on the school’s name. State finals for other high school winter sports continue throughout February.
