As temperatures prepare to cool down, duffers are getting ready to participate in the sixth annual Friends of the Cathedral Golf Tournament Sept. 27 on the links at the JW Marriot Desert Ridge Resort and Spa.

The tournament is designed to raise funds for Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral, but also to raise awareness of the importance of the cathedral in the diocese.

“The cathedral is the Chair of our bishop, the center of our diocese,” said Theresa Serrano-Keel, a founding member of Friends of the Cathedral.

“The cathedral belongs to every parish in the diocese, and it is important that the faithful take ownership of it and be aware of what happens there,” she said.

The tournament will seek to raise awareness for this year’s upcoming Eucharistic Congress, which will take place at the cathedral Nov. 18-22 to close out the Year of Faith.

Organizers are also excited to have taken on two partners for thetournament. This year’s tournament chairman, David Arambula said, “A portion of proceeds from the event will be used to help support Maggie’s Place, a Catholic non-profit which assists unborn children, the newly born, and supports new mothers.”

Proceeds will also be used to assist Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral School students with tuition assistance. Students will be on hand to participate in a fun “A Prayer and a Putt” hole during the tournament. “We build the tournament to help the cathedral, but also to help our selected partners,” Arambula said.

There will be several contests conducted at the event, such as “Closest to the Pin,” “Longest Drive” (Men and Women), “Longest Putt,” as well as a “Fast Hole” competition. Awards will be presented for the first, second and third place teams.

The tournament usually draws close to 100 golfers. In the past, bishops have been represented in the morning launch and at the post-tournament luncheon. The luncheon will also feature a silent auction and a raffle.
