Seventh- and eighth-graders at San Francisco de Asís in Flagstaff know their numbers.

They took first place in all four categories for their respective grades during the May 10 Coconino County Math Competition. That makes the school the first to make a clean sweep in the competition. Students also earned six of the 10 individual wins and were recognized with certificates of achievement.

Students competed among peers at six other schools. Activities included a 40-question traditional math test, a 20-question team relay, a math carnival and a College Bowl. Both seventh- and eighth-grade teams emerged victorious in the final round of the College Bowl and each 10-person team finished their respective relay race first too.

Finalists for the 40-question individual tests were:

  • Eighth grade: Rebecca Encinas (1st place), Andrew Veazie (2nd), Luke Thompson (4th)
  • Seventh grade: Benjamin Papez (2nd place), Charity Swift (4th), San Schmitz (8th)
