Catholic publications offer windows into the life of the Church
February 5, 2009 | The Catholic Sun
Did you read the story about the thousands of Catholics who came together for the three-day pro-life rally in Tempe?
What about the one where local Catholic charities are struggling to help those in crisis in this weakened economy?
Do you remember the story about the East Valley parishioners pitching in to bring Christmas joy to the Indian reservation?
Or what about the educational pieces on the Blessed Virgin Mary and why we give her such prominence in the Church, and the liturgical foundations of the Advent Season?
And what of the story detailing the plight of our brothers and sisters in Christ who are displaced by war or social unrest in their homelands?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, chances are that you read about them here in The Catholic Sun, your twice-monthly diocesan newspaper — and probably not anywhere else. These and scores of other faith-enriching stories are the backbone of The Catholic Sun, because they are a reflection of you in the parishes, schools, clubs and organizations that make up this Diocese of Phoenix. We cover the timely and the timeless.
February is Catholic Press Month, a time set aside by Catholic publications such as this one to celebrate our role as evangelizers. It’s also a time to renew and reflect on our mission to help Catholics learn more about their faith, to provide a vehicle for the bishop to speak with the faithful, to be a reliable source of information about Church news and a forum for the exchange of ideas.
It’s also a chance for us to take a step back and assess the sheer volume of story ideas that pass through these pages, which would not be possible without you, our readers, who are on fire for the faith.
Perhaps one of the more exciting aspects of a Catholic publication is the opportunity for the faithful to realize that they are part of a larger community, a family that extends beyond their parish borders. Stories of faith, hope, success and challenges grace the pages of each issue of publications like The Catholic Sun, which provides readers across town or across the state empathy with other Catholics, as well as inspiration and motivation in their own lives and activities.
The number of good, important and faith-affirming stories out there waiting to be told is countless. The people and the inspirations behind them are limitless. For us, and for the hundreds of Catholic publications throughout the country like us, it’s our mission as Catholic journalists to be the windows into the rich, vibrant life of the Church.
The Diocese of Phoenix is a geographically large, populous and culturally diverse community — a community unlike any other in that we are united in a common belief in Christ’s saving power and a common mission in bringing God’s word to all we encounter.
As we begin this Catholic Press Month, we recommit ourselves to all those who call the Diocese of Phoenix home. It is in this spirit that we call upon you to take full advantage of what this diocesan newspaper has to offer. Let us know how we’re doing. What do you need from us in the way of stories or information? What can we be doing better? What features do you really enjoy?
Drop us a line. We want to hear from you.
