Word and Art with Bishop Dolan EP15 : Our Mother of Perpetual Help

Join Bishop John Dolan for this week’s edition of “Word and Art,” where he connects a Sunday reading with a famous work of art. For the fourth Sunday of lent, our readings invite us to return to the Lord, and to keep our eyes firmly fixed on Jerusalem. For Christians, the new Jerusalem is Christ Jesus. And yet, if we fail to keep our eyes fixed on him, we become like those exiled in Babylon. A very famous 15th century Byzantine icon called, “Our Mother of Perpetual Help,” is offered for this segment of “Word and Art.” Copies of this image are found in nearly every church around the world and a novena is often prayed weekly as the image is displayed. The original Greek icon is found at the church of Saint Alphonsus Ligouri in Rome. As Bishop John explains, this icon invites us (the viewer) to look upon Christ, the new Jerusalem, as a means of our salvation. Fixing our eyes on Christ, who will be lifted up on the cross, we will return from our own exile. Bishop John brings an exciting and insightful perspective to the “Word and Art” series, as he earned a Master of Arts Degree in Liturgy/Church Art and Architecture from St. Patrick’s Seminary and University in Menlo Park, Calif.

Bishop Dolan visits Foundation for Senior Living Programs

As Bishop John Dolan continues to visit parishes and schools across the Diocese of Phoenix during his first 18 months since being named bishop in Arizona, he is also meeting with several Catholic organizations and Apostolates in the diocese. Take a look at a recent visit Bishop John made with the folks at Foundation for Senior Living (FSL) and witness the tremendous impact they make for many across the Valley of the Sun and state. The Catholic Diocese of Phoenix established FSL in 1974 as a private, non-profit organization to improve the quality of life for adults and their caregivers, originally providing housing and social services to elders and individuals with disabilities without regard to race, religion or social status. Over the years, FSL has grown and created an integrated system of care that allows adults to age in place through a continuum of home and community-based health services. One of the largest non-profit organizations in the state of Arizona, FSL offers the customized care of an independent professional. Be sure to take a look at this video of Bishop John Dolan leading the Stations of the Cross during the first Friday of Lent at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Phoenix on Feb. 16th. The Ahwatukee based parish hosted a Fish Fry following the Stations of the Cross. Hosted by the Knights of Columbus, the dinner was sold-out.
