The annual Charity and Development Appeal that supports individuals and families in need throughout the Diocese of Phoenix gets underway Feb. 8.

The Charity and Development Appeal supports more than 70 educational, charitable and spiritual organizations which counsel, feed clothe, house, educate and comfort those in need throughout the four counties in the Diocese of Phoenix.

That’s the day Massgoers will see a three-minute video highlighting CDA’s impact and catch glimpses of Phoenix’s bishops engaging and blessing those in need. Catholics can also pledge to donate by mail or online. This year’s goal is $8.3 million.

“The CDA is an example of how we are all Church,” said Fr. Greg Schlarb, vicar of stewardship for the diocese. “Because we are able to work together toward a common goal, thousands of lives are changed for the better.”

The CDA supports seminarian and priest formation plus scholarships for future deacons and parish leaders. It also strengthens budgets of many diocesan offices, programs and training that equip parish leaders for their ministries.

Not everyone in need is obvious nor carries a sign. Leaders and volunteers at 13 local charitable organizations that receive support from the CDA know what to look for.

They also know that their apostolates succeed when support is strong. Catholics raised nearly $1.7 million for such ministries during last year’s Charity and Development Appeal. They raised some $9 million overall that supported 70 spiritual, charitable and educational needs throughout the diocese.
