In the revised New American Bible, Clement is listed as the fourth pope, serving 88-97. He is an important witness to the first century of the Catholic Church. Early Christian writers called him a disciple of the Apostles, and he may be the Clement mentioned in Philippians 4:3.
As bishop of Rome, Clement wrote an Epistle to the Corinthians that is believed to be the earliest surviving record of an intervention by Rome in the affairs of a local Church. Whatever problems prompted the letter, Clement gently urges the Corinthians to reconcile and accept apostolic tradition. Some legends suggesting his martyrdom are discounted.
He is the patron saint of marble-workers and stonecutters, and of St. Clement of Rome Parish in Sun City.
