A Funeral Planning Workshop
In this workshop, we will explore the meaning and significance of the Catholic funeral rites, with particular attention to the Vigil, the Funeral Liturgy, and the Rite of Committal. We will consider the choices offered in the Catholic ritual, including Scripture and other texts, music, and the roles of liturgical ministers, as well as how these elements can come together to create a prayerful and meaningful celebration.

Planning a funeral before death can be a valuable act of faith and care. It can help the person who is dying and their family face the reality of death with Christian hope. Thoughtful planning can also relieve families of many decisions at a difficult time, allowing them to participate more fully in the funeral rites and to attend to their grief and one another.

A Catholic funeral is more than a farewell. It is an act of faith celebrated by the Church, proclaiming our belief in the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ and in the hope of eternal life. The funeral rites provide sacred moments that help us mourn, remember, give thanks, and entrust our loved ones to God’s mercy. They also offer an opportunity for those who are searching for meaning or faith to encounter the hope at the heart of the Christian message.

Although the subject of death is serious, planning a funeral need not be a grim task. We will approach this work as an opportunity to reflect on our faith, to make thoughtful choices, and to prepare for one of life’s most important moments with hope and trust in God.
