SUMMARY:Holy Spirit Tempe Theology of the Body and Gender with Michael and Rachel Villaneuva
DESCRIPTION:The questions surrounding sex and gender are here to stay… because they are human questions: “Who am I?” “What does it mean to be a man or a woman?” “ Does my body have a meaning and purpose?” A robust response to these questions – both intellectually sound and personally compelling– is demanded for each person to reach understanding\, conversion of heart\, peace\, and compassion. Join Michael and Rachel in Hanley Hall as they explore the explosion of gender ideology and propose the key to embracing one’s God-given identity.

SUMMARY:The Gospel of Peace: An Evening with John Dear on His New Commentary on the Gospels
DESCRIPTION:“Fr. John Dear’s The Gospel of Peace is an invitation to go beyond a conceptual consideration of peace to the living of peace\, especially as a condition and an attribute of discipleship to Jesus.”–Cardinal Peter Turkson\, Vatican City\nPriest\, peacemaker\, author\, and Nobel Peace Prize Nominee\, Father John Dear\, will be with us for an evening to talk about and sign copies of his new book\, his life’s work\, “The Gospel of Peace: A Commentary on Matthew\, Mark and Luke from the Perspective of Nonviolence” (Orbis). It is the first ever commentary on the Synoptic Gospels from the perspective of active nonviolence\, in the tradition of Gandhi and Dr. King. In this original work\, Fr. John walks us through every line of the three Synoptic Gospels pointing out Jesus’ practice and teachings on nonviolence\, peace\, and universal love each step of the way and invites us to become practitioners of Gospel nonviolence like Jesus. John Dear’s Jesus is like Gandhi and Dr. King—nonviolent to the core\, a disarming\, healing presence toward those in need and a revolutionary disrupter of the unjust status quo and a political threat to the ruling authorities who succeed in killing him\, only to push Jesus to the heights of nonviolence through his death and resurrection. This original commentary brings a fresh new approach to the Gospels that will help us all carry Jesus’ global campaign of nonviolence for justice\, disarmament\, and creation. \nFee: $20 per person. Pre-registration required. \nCommuter\nFull price $20.00 \nSign Up By Wednesday\, Jan 31\, 2024 at 4:00pm\nFRC.retreatportal.com

SUMMARY:Theology Day Presentation with Charles Bobertz\, Ph.D. - From Lord's Supper to Adoration: The History of the Earliest Christian Eucharist
DESCRIPTION:Delve deeper into the Eucharist with Charles as he discusses the history of the Christian Eucharist from the celebration of the Lord’s Supper to present day Eucharistic Adoration on Friday\, February 2! \nJesus gathered with his disciples to celebrate a ritual meal that marked the dawn of the Messianic Age. The earliest Christians continued this ritual meal\, the Lord’s Supper\, in their house churches\, now with the bread enacting the continuing presence of the resurrected Christ in their midst. How did the earliest Christians understand this “real presence” of Jesus Christ 1300 years before the doctrine of transubstantiation? Our journey will take us from Lord’s Supper to present day Eucharistic Adoration. \nDeacon Charles A. Bobertz received his B.A. from Saint John’s University in 1980 (History and German) and his Master of Theological Studies degree (Scripture) from Harvard University in 1983. He received M.A.\, Th.M. and Ph.D. degrees (New Testament and Early Christianity) from Yale University in 1988. He was ordained to the diaconate for the diocese of St. Cloud in 1997. Since 1993\, Deacon Bobertz has taught New Testament and Patristics and Homiletics at Saint John’s School of Theology and Seminary (MN). He is the editor\, along with Professor David Brakke\, of Scripture and Early Christian Identity (University of Notre Dame Press\, 2002). His book on the Gospel of Mark entitled\, The Gospel of Mark: A Liturgical Reading was published in 2016 by Baker Academic Press. His new book\, Cyprian of Carthage: Priest and Patron is being published by Peeters Press this year. Professor Bobertz has also published more than 30 articles in leading theological journals as well as more than 100 pastoral publications. \nRegistration is required: www.collegevilleMN.com/theologyday or call 320-363-3560. There is no cost for attending Theology Day. Start time indicates when the presentation begins; in-person check-in is 30 minutes prior. Lunch provided.

SUMMARY:Candlemas: The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord - Holy Spirit Tempe
DESCRIPTION:Forty days following the Feast of the Nativity of the Lord (Christmas)\, the Church celebrates Candlemas\, also known as the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. It is when we commemorate the Virgin Mary first bringing her child\, Jesus\, to the Temple as part of the Jewish ritual custom and the Prophet Simeon proclaiming Jesus as “a light for revelation to the Gentiles” upon seeing Jesus brought to the temple\, and so candles are blessed on this day\, representing a light to the world. \nTo celebrate this feast\, we will have a candlelit mass at 8pm on Friday\, February 2nd with a blessing of candles. We invite parishioners to bring to the church new candles they wish to have blessed at the ceremony. If you are bringing a candle\, please tag it with your name and arrive to the church no later than 7:50pm to place it on the tables outside. The blessed candles will be available to be picked up following the mass.

SUMMARY:Fast Talk Theology with Maureen Day\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:A program presented in partnership with Franciscan School of Theology \n“A Spirituality of Parenting: Seeing God in the Blessed Mess” \nParenthood is often a time when many parents put their own personal spirituality “on hold” even if they continue to attend Mass and participate in parish life. One of the many reasons this is so unfortunate is that the sacrifice\, formation\, and generativity that comes with parenthood are some of the most spiritually insightful moments of our lives. Participants will walk away with practices that will help them see the spiritual relevance of parenting as well as a more integrated and balanced sense of self. \nNo fee and no registration required. Program will be in the Garces room in Piper Hall. \nOpen Attendance\nFRC.retreatportal.com
