DESCRIPTION:Nullity Ministers are a vital part of the life of the parishes of the Diocese of Phoenix. These ministers are trained by the Tribunal to be present to those desiring to petition for an annulment. Through a four day class\, Nullity Ministers gain important information in order to serve those who have obtained a civil divorce and are interested in petitioning for an annulment. \nThe training consists of 4 sessions\, they will be held on May 6th\, 13th\, 20th\, 27th\, 2022 at the Diocesan Pastoral Center from 9 am to 4 pm. This training will also be available online or recorded for those that are not able to attend on those dates. Registration is due April 14\, 2022. SUMMARY:Healing of Memories Workshop for Veterans
DESCRIPTION:Announcing an in-person Healing of Memories Workshop for All Veterans. It will be held at the Franciscan Renewal Center in Scottsdale\, AZ on May 13-15\, 2022. The workshop will provide the participants with a safe experiential and interactive way to address anger\, loss\, grief and guilt. The workshop is free of charge to any service member or veteran\, including all meals and two nights lodging. It begins with dinner at 6pm on Friday\, May 13 and ends at 1pm on Sunday\, May 15. Veterans who have attended this workshop say that it was a major step in their healing from their psychological and spiritual wounds. Transportation will be provided to those who need it. \nIn order to ensure the safety of the participants and facilitators at this workshop\, we will be following the CDC COVID Guidelines. In an abundance of caution to protect the participants\, some of whom may have underlying health issues\, we will be asking participants to either show proof of vaccination or\, if unvaccinated\, proof of a negative COVID test within 48 hours of arrival. All participants will be provided their own private rooms. \nThe Healing of Memories Workshop was created by Father Michael Lapsley\, an Anglican missionary priest\, who in 1990 suffered the loss of his hands and the sight in one eye from a letter bomb that was sent to him in Zimbabwe by a supporter of the pro-apartheid government in South Africa. After a long recovery from the bombing\, Father Lapsley decided to dedicate his life to helping victims of emotional\, psychological and spiritual wounds inflicted by war\, human rights abuses and other traumatic circumstances. \nAny service member or veteran who is interested in the workshop may find out more information or register free for the workshop by contacting Mike Wold\, US Navy Veteran and workshop coordinator\, at 651-687-9767.

SUMMARY:Fr. Michael Gilbert Presents “The Holy Icon” / Door to the Heavenly Kingdom
DESCRIPTION:As we enter the world of holy icons\, we must remember how they exist to draw us into the contemplation of divine beauty. They are doors into eternity\, into the heavenly kingdom\, and not simply beautiful pieces of art. The veneration of holy icons safeguards and proclaims our faith in the Incarnation and in the intrinsic goodness of all material creation. The icons belong to worship and exist exclusively in the atmosphere of prayer and liturgy. The icons also serve as a point of unity between the Eastern and Western Churches and belong to our common patrimony. Icons have been venerated and continue to be venerated in all the Rites of the Catholic Church. \nWe will be looking at the history of the veneration of icons – from the first Christian catacombs into the decrees of the 7th Ecumenical Council and three Iconoclastic Periods in which icons were discarded\, defaced\, and destroyed by those who did not properly understand and venerate them. Next\, we will look at examples of more contemporary icons in the Roman Catholic tradition and how we are to properly venerate\, care for\, and promote the veneration of holy icons. \nIf St. Jerome’s statement “Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ” is true\, then it is equally true for us to affirm that “ignorance of the Holy Icons is ignorance of Christ” because\, as we will discuss\, the icons are to be venerated with the same relative veneration as is shown the Cross and the Book of the Gospels. Icons do with color what Scripture does with words.

DESCRIPTION:This course seeks to examine and understand questions regarding the theological significance of embodiment as developed throughout Catholic Tradition. Historical in structure\, the course focuses on the development of teachings and practices regarding the body in early\, medieval\, and modern Catholicism\, with particular emphasis on the theology of the body developed by St. Pope John Paul II during a series of 129 Wednesday audiences spanning the years 1979-1984. Practices such as asceticism\, sexual renunciation\, marriage and procreation\, suffering\, and dying are examined in light of the Church’s central doctrines regarding creation and the fall\, redemption and incarnation\, and death and the resurrection of the body. \nThis is a college level course for audit or credit from Franciscan University of Steubenville and can be taken in-person or via distance (zoom).
