With a large tapestry bearing the portrait of the woman known as the "Saint of the Gutters" suspended above him, Pope Francis proclaimed the sainthood of Mother Teresa of Kolkata, hailing her courage and love for the poor.

Fr. Louis Sigman, who helped build St. Daniel the Prophet Parish in Scottsdale and founded Corpus Christi Parish in Ahwatukee before his retirement, died Aug. 29.

“Today we are going to make one strong resolution that in this beautiful city no man, no woman, no child will ever feel unwanted, unloved,” said Mother Teresa when she arrived in Phoenix Feb. 1, 1989. “Let us thank God in this great gift that we can share in his love by giving love to others.”

Such concrete actions will benefit human life and the environment, Pope Francis said.
