“Sisters Speak Out,” scheduled for June 24th in Washington, DC, to seek justice for people in migration and all vulnerable people who will be impacted by the current funding bill in Congress that would invest more resources in detaining and deporting our neighbors while cutting resources for food programs for the poor and other essential services.
The organizers of the DC event are extending the invitation to religious sisters in other parts of the country to participate. As sisters in Arizona/Sonora, we want to unite our voices and prayers to these actions at a local level, in particular for the sake of our migrant brothers and sisters. In recent weeks, we have heard terrible stories about treatment people experience in detention in Eloy, AZ. We have also talked with people who were wrongfully deported who had been detained in Eloy. We want to be a presence outside this detention center so that those who are detained know that we have seen their suffering and we are praying with them.
