Theology Day Presentation with Charles Bobertz, Ph.D. – From Lord’s Supper to Adoration: The History of the Earliest Christian Eucharist

February 2 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

Free

Delve deeper into the Eucharist with Charles as he discusses the history of the Christian Eucharist from the celebration of the Lord’s Supper to present day Eucharistic Adoration on Friday, February 2!

Jesus gathered with his disciples to celebrate a ritual meal that marked the dawn of the Messianic Age. The earliest Christians continued this ritual meal, the Lord’s Supper, in their house churches, now with the bread enacting the continuing presence of the resurrected Christ in their midst. How did the earliest Christians understand this “real presence” of Jesus Christ 1300 years before the doctrine of transubstantiation? Our journey will take us from Lord’s Supper to present day Eucharistic Adoration.

Deacon Charles A. Bobertz received his B.A. from Saint John’s University in 1980 (History and German) and his Master of Theological Studies degree (Scripture) from Harvard University in 1983. He received M.A., Th.M. and Ph.D. degrees (New Testament and Early Christianity) from Yale University in 1988. He was ordained to the diaconate for the diocese of St. Cloud in 1997. Since 1993, Deacon Bobertz has taught New Testament and Patristics and Homiletics at Saint John’s School of Theology and Seminary (MN). He is the editor, along with Professor David Brakke, of Scripture and Early Christian Identity (University of Notre Dame Press, 2002). His book on the Gospel of Mark entitled, The Gospel of Mark: A Liturgical Reading was published in 2016 by Baker Academic Press. His new book, Cyprian of Carthage: Priest and Patron is being published by Peeters Press this year. Professor Bobertz has also published more than 30 articles in leading theological journals as well as more than 100 pastoral publications.
