The Catholic Sun took home nine  awards in writing, photography and design during 2012 Arizona Newspaper Association’s Better Newspaper and Excellence in Advertising contests. More than 50 newspapers entered the contest, submitting more than 1,000 entries.

The Catholic Sun took home nine awards from the Arizona Newspaper Association.

The newspaper finished third in the Reporting and Newswriting category. The Catholic Sun competes in the non-daily, circulation greater than 10,000 category. Ambria Hammel’s piece “Keeping the poor fed,” on Paz de Cristo won second place in the Best Feature category. Hammel and J.D. Long-Garcia placed third in the Enterprise Reporting category.

Long-Garcia’s photo from the annual Honor Your Mother celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe placed first for Best News Photograph.The newspaper’s photography was also recognized for its coverage of  the triduum in “50 Days of Easter,” as well as the photography featured in the annual report, which won first and third places, respectively, in Best Feature Photo Layout.

The series of ads on Natural Family Planning took home first place in Best Paid Ad Series, Black and White. The Serrano’s ads won third place is Best Paid Ad Series, Color.
